Conversations about superintelligence can quickly move from possibility to certainty. We take a different starting point: treat the future as a set of questions to explore, with assumptions that can be challenged.

Separate capability from consequence

A hypothetical increase in capability does not specify how a technology will be deployed, governed or distributed. Those are additional questions. Discuss them separately so that a scenario does not quietly smuggle in its conclusion.

Build more than one scenario

Explore different combinations of progress, adoption, constraints and institutional response. State the assumptions behind each scenario. The purpose is to reveal dependencies in today’s decisions, not to announce a forecast.

Look for useful actions today

Some preparations may make sense across several futures: developing organisational understanding, improving information quality, clarifying responsibility and learning how to evaluate new systems. Other decisions may need to wait for better evidence.

Uncertainty need not stop a useful conversation. It is a reason to be more precise about what we know, what we assume and what would change our view.
